The Book of Ganymede is a project that my partner, Peter, and I have long envisioned. Inspired by our passion for medieval art and history, we aim to explore and illuminate queer life during the Dark Ages. We’re recreating an illuminated manuscript using authentic techniques and materials from the 10th to 14th centuries. From making iron gall ink and carving quills from goose feathers to crafting pigments from crushed stones and boiled plants, we’re committed to reviving this art form.

While we may rely on some modern techniques, our goal is to connect with a largely forgotten world. The lives of queer individuals in the Middle Ages are often left undocumented, only hinted at in historical texts. Through research and creative writing, we hope to embody two gay monks in a monastery, revealing their secrets. Join us as we uncover this hidden history!

Welcome to our journey into the enchanting world of medieval ink-making! We are thrilled to share our process of creating oak gall ink, a time-honoured technique used by scribes to produce rich, long-lasting inks for illuminated manuscripts that have truly stood the test of time.

More videos, updates and progress will be posted throughout the year.
Thank you so much for your support and interest in the project!
